PHNX Jury Interview 2024

Why did you think it was important to join the PHNX jury this year?
If we continue amplifying the same voices, are we truly contributing anything new? Embracing fresh perspectives is crucial for an industry undergoing change, and perhaps not at the pace of the world. Establishing new festivals and forums to evaluate and discuss ideas is fundamental to sustain the vitality of our craft.
What do you think of our hybrid jury, featuring creatives but also strategists, clients and people from all corners of the industry?
The industry thrives on more than just the creative department; excelling in this field demands not only creativity but also a strategic mindset, a curiosity for new ideas, and the determination to bring them to life consistently. A diverse jury, encompassing not just creatives but also strategists, clients, and representatives from various industry facets, reflects the multifaceted nature of our profession. Such diversity provides a comprehensive validation for the work, showcasing its relevance across different perspectives.

On the flip side, it's crucial to ponder whether a larger jury elevates or diminishes the creative bar. At the end of the day votes translate into averages. And average is... Average.

While diversity is essential, maintaining high creative standards remains paramount. Striking the right balance ensures that the industry benefits from a variety of viewpoints without compromising on excellence.
What do you think of the idea of free entry until the shortlist stage?
This is a significant favor the festival is extending to the industry, showcasing a genuine commitment to the common good and progress rather than merely a commercial spectacle. It reflects a high moral standard, a clear position to support creativity- and resonates with the values of many creatives worldwide who perceive creative festivals are becoming money-printing machines for their organizers.
How would you define the perfect PHNX Awards winner?
Creativity is a blend of original thought and skillful action, not an exclusive choice between the two. Its value is further heightened when it brings about tangible societal impact: sparking new conversations, instigating physical changes in people's lives, and shaping popular culture. Creativity is an idea meant for the world, not confined to a jury room. It has to be celebrated by the people- otherwise it's just a great piece for a portfolio.
What is having the biggest impact on creative trends at the moment?
Creativity today dances to a very eclectic melody. I think there's never been a better moment to be creative: from the emergence of AI tools that empower visual and narrative exploration, to sustainability and social responsibility guiding the narrative. Or data and hyperpersonalization and immersive experiences catering to individuals as we never before thought possible. Add Web3 and how it unlocks new possibilities for ownership and community. En fin- there's so much going on, It's hard to believe when people say creativity is in crisis.
Who would you nominate as your two or three “creatives of the year”?
ChatGPT and MidJourney.

These technologies democratize content creation, open doors to new artistic horizons, and challenge traditional notions of authorship.

While ethical concerns linger, the true impact depends on our choices.

We may like it or not - but they represent the biggest disruption to our industry now.
Without doubt- the creative protagonists of the year.
