Story The Recording Academy continued to face racial bias criticisms both in its inner workings and based on the representation of winners and perceived snubs onstage at the GRAMMYs. Yet behind the scenes so much change was happening. From appointing the first ever black CEO to creating initiatives like Women in the Mix, The Black Music Collective, Behind the Record, and She Is The Music—All of which advocate for credit, diversity, and inclusion. But none had the same level of visibility as the biggest night in music—Grammy’s night. It was time to take our message to the mainstage. So instead of creating just another piece of content we created an entirely new award. For the first time in their 66 year history we changed the color of their iconic GRAMMY trophy to create an entirely new award–The Global Impact Award— given not just for a great year, but a lifetime of impact. This is now the most rare GRAMMY of all time, with only two ever being handed out, to Dr. Dre and Jay Z. Creating not just a coveted award but much needed visibility and an incredible platform for diverse voices.
